Type W is designed for heavy-duty power systems, serving as a power supply cable in various applications. These applications include AC systems (both grounded and ungrounded), mobile and portable electrical equipment, as well as motor and battery leads. In 4-conductor constructions, it is suitable for three-phase systems, with one conductor serving as a ground. For 5-conductor constructions, it caters to three-phase systems where one conductor is utilized as a neutral, and another as a ground. Type W is suitable for use in applications with voltages up to 2000 volts and temperatures ranging from -40°C to +90°C.
construction:
Conductor: A flexible strand of soft-drawn bare or tinned copper conductor is provided. The green conductor serves the sole purpose of grounding.
Separator: A tape separator is placed between the conductor and insulation.
Insulation: Ethylene-Propylene Rubber (EPR)
Color Code: Refer to color chart below
Reinforcement: A single-faced rubber-filled binder tape is applied over the core.
Jacket: The thermoset compound is black and heavy-duty CPE, providing resistance to ozone, sunlight, oil, flame, weather, impact, and abrasion.
Standards:
UL 44 Thermoset-Insulated Wire and Cable, UL 1650 Portable Power Cable, CSA C22.2 96-17, C(UL) FT1 & FT5, and oil-resistant inners. The cable is also sunlight-resistant at 90°C in wet or dry conditions. It features ASTM B-33 tin-coated soft or annealed copper wire for electrical purposes and is rated and flexible at –40°C to +90°C. Additionally, it includes ASTM B-172 rope-lay-stranded copper conductors with bunch-stranded members. The cable complies with ICEA S-75-381/NEMA WC 58 for portable and power feeder cables for use in mines and similar applications, as well as ICEA S-95-658/NEMA WC 70 for non-shielded power cables rated 2000 volts or less.
